    Thank You All
I don't know what to say. Despite the threats of being abducted by aliens along with drawing the gaze of the evil eye and, it seems, without apology, a large enough portion of the Pegasus voting community chose to give their votes to "Close Your Eyes" that it won in the category of "Best Comedy". Again, my gratitude goes out to everyone, even those who did not vote for the song.

The demons are quite pleased and have decided to go on a world-wide tour, and will be appearing in a bed near you soon.

I'd say more, but as I said before, I don't know what to say, other than "Thank You!"

Watch out for land mines. And blankets. And your mother.

    [update 10/28/2008]

I forgot to incorporate the other very deserving song, for which I apologize (there's that other song again... Roper gets an extra reference) -- My only excuse is that the Demons must have been eating their vegetables, so I missed the chocolate... Sorry Graham!)

    The demons thank you
It has come to my attention that "Close Your Eyes" has once again garnered a Pegasus nomination, this time in the "Best Comedy" category. I am once again astounded, gratified, and perplexed, and wish to thank everyone for their support, whether they nominated the song or not.

The other songs that have been nominated in this category are all quite good, and I wish to congratulate everyone on their nominations, and am humbled by the company that I am privileged to keep. This year has been a scant year for me, Filk wise; not by choice but due to financial and health issues, but I hope to be in good form for OVFF. I'd better be, because I've been given the great honor of a concert slot at the convention this year! Please don't let this scare you away from OVFF!

I now, of course, have to live with the hazard of Alien Salad Abduction, and until I make my Apology and accept that Chocolate is a Vegetable, endure the gaze of the Evil Eyeball. Just Close Your Eyes and imagine the fix I'm in! I'm doomed!

Again, thanks to everyone for their continued support of the Pegasus Awards! Please vote for those songs you like best, even if you can't make it to OVFF this year, the ballot is open to everyone in the Filk community! Even if you are attending, if you have made up your mind for whom and what songs you're going to vote before October 20th, please submit your vote on-line or via "snail mail" (details on the ballot page), because this allows the Pegasus Committee members (and some OVFF ConCom members as well) to spend less time counting ballots and more time filking and/or sleeping at OVFF!

    Random thought of the year
Overheard someplace in my brain this evening:
M: How's the St. Marys High School football team doing this season?
    P: It was dissolved.
M: I'm surprised they would disband the...
P: No, no; It wasn't disbanded. It was dissolved...  by the science club!

    The End of an Era
As many of you know, I've been working on a contract at a large company in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for he past 17 months. Well, as of tomorrow when I leave the office, that contract is at an end, and with it, my life as a contractor.

At least this stage of my life as a contractor.

I will get into the car after work tomorrow and drive as far as my body and brain will allow me to drive (probably the Champaign Urbana area), collapse, and then strike out again for the wilds of Central, Ohio, where I plan on hiding in the underbrush to catch a glimpse of the elusive Pegasus as it is captured by some deserving nominee (I may be a nominee, but I'm not particularly deserving).

In the outskirts of Columbus, I'll join up with my lovely wife and joyous son (who will be ancient -- One Year Old! -- on Friday) and we'll sneak into the hotel and set up a bivouac, from whence we will may our daring forays into the filk rooms and consuites of that thing we've come to call OVFF.

Once the con is over, I'll go home to West Virginia. I won't be employed at that moment, but then again, I won't be without employment. The following weekend, I'll have to once again leave my wife and son and venture forth back to the prairies and planes of Iowa, but this time with hope in my heart, as on Monday, the 30th, I will take my place amongst the directly employed at Rockwell Collins as a Senior Software Engineer.

Once again, I'll be separated from my wife and son, but this time, there's a light at the end of the tunnel.

    We're moving to Iowa.

    Lock, stock, and 5 cats...

[info]spiritdance will be left to pack up the house and all that sort of stuff, while I laze about in Iowa, scaring the children and designing software intended to keep airplanes in the air.

Anyway, I figured that it was time to say something. I would have written sooner, but I have been without proper and unrestricted internet access since toward the end of September.

I suppose I ought to admit it in public...
Yes, my song "Close Your Eyes" has been nominated for a Pegasus Award for Best Filk Song. This is quite an honor, and it was a bit of a shock. I thank everyone who nominated it, and wonder not-so secretly whether I should be worried about your mental health.

Meanwhile, my dear friend [info]cadhla did this to it, with which another dear friend, [info]filkertom did this... I'm looking forward to what Judi Miller will do with it at OVFF...

    Anyway... I've admitted it.

Now, back to trying to figure out how to live at home while still bringing in an income so that I can properly traumatize David...

    E-mail problem resolved
My e-mail server is once again responding to SMTP and IMAP transfers... In other words, I am now getting all that mail that has been queued on various systems trying to get to me.

    Thank you for your patience.

    E-mail is currently down
I'm certain that there are some people (esp on the OVFF and/or Pegasus committee) that are trying to reach me via e-mail, but my e-mail is down until some time tomorrow.

If you have something important to tell me, reply to this and I'll let you know how to reach me until my email server is back on-line.

Sorry about the lack of anything interesting to say - work has me completely buried and my creativity and energy is sapped.

    Duckon
It's been a while since I last posted an update, and this one isn't very interesting.

In two week (the weekend of June 9-11), I'll be at Duckon. If anyone (non-smoking) is interested in a room-share, please let me know.

On Sunday at 1:00PM, I'll have an hour long concert set (replacing Eric Coleman on the schedule). This would normally not be a problem, as those who know me know that I can go on for hours and hours and hours.... The problem is, I'm blocked -- I'm having trouble coming up with a set that I think will be good enough to fill that amount of time with me, solo. (I wish [info]spiritdance could be there, as that would make it all very easy, and I miss her terribly anyway.)

On top of that, my parents, who have never seen me in performance, are planning on being there for the concert.

I really want to make this a good solo concert!

So, my friends, what would you like to hear me do, or if you're not going to be at Duckcon, what would you want to hear me do in a one hour concert set?

Here are some songs that might show up in such a set:

    • A Thousand Songs
    • Close Your Eyes
    • Solar Flare
    • Touch-Tone Lullabye
    • The Lady
    • Rain on the Roof
    • Walkin' Away from Caroline
    • Winter when She Goes
    • Monster in My Head
    • The Ballad of Dr. Freud
    • When I Go
    • Red
This list is not exhaustive. I don't have my music books with me, just some lyrics files, but I don't play using music books, so I should be OK. Please reply with your suggestions!

    Thank you all!

    A very brief puzzlement
You are receiving this message as an opt-in subscriber to LISTNAMEHERE. If you do not wish to receive further messages from us, please click on the unsubscribe link below.

This was embedded within a bit of spam that I got this morning. I would think that people attempting to make money from unsolicited commercial e-mail would at least attempt to fill in the blanks that the uber-spammer provided to give the message some semblance of legitimacy.

    I guess not.

While I'm at it, just what is Professional Viagra? An ED medication for porn stars? The stuff they use for erecting buildings? Goop that they sell to coat the pivots on mic stands so that the microphone doesn't droop during performances? Whatever it is, I'm getting a lot of offers for it these days.

    Lost in translation

My parents spent a few months in Spain whilst my father was working with some physicists there. My mother came across a shop that sold low cost items made in China. The product labels were almost all in English, some in English and Chinese, a few in Chinese only, and none in Spanish.

The English used on the packaging was very odd, and she thought to pick up some small items to bring back as gifts for her family and others that might find them amusing. What she gave me was a hand-held LCD game device labeled "Multifunction Palmtop Game Machine" (GS-521) and claims that it's "9999 in 1". I've tried to photograph the package, but the plastic blister it's in is too shiny, and none of my pictures have turned out, so I've transcribed the text from the back of the package for your enlightenment.

Please note that all spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and even the line breaks and spacing, have been painstakingly copied from the package. The toy itself has "Fighter Bomber" emblazoned on it, and it's shaped as a flattened one seater jet with two engines at the rear and two bombs, one at the tip of each short wing.

Chicago Area (specifically, LaGrange/Countryside IL) help needed

I hate to ask this, but is there anyone reading this who is in the LaGrange/Countryside, IL, neck of the woods who can run an errand for me? It involves a screwdriver, express mail, and a few other things.

Behind this tag, you'll find the details )

    Thank you for your patience.

PS: If anyone can point me to a MacOS X compatible LJ client that both doesn't sabotage you by saying it's posting to your journal, but instead posts to the last community you posted to unless you play with the "posting to" drop-down menu, and also provides HTML preview, I'd very much appreciate it. Both iJournal and Xjournal have proven themselves to be less than Daniel friendly.

The Thing that ate my car, Part II
Sorry about the delay, and with apologies to the Dorsai, as Thing is not responsible for the condition of my car.

Herein lies the next installment of the tale of woe... )
And so endeth this part of the tale. Reading over it, I see that I've left a lot out, not thanked anyone, let alone thanked them enough, but I've spent over 1.5 hours on it, so I'm going to work. I'll thank everyone individually later. For now, I'll just express my thanks to the collected Dorsai at Thing for letting me be there, helping me through my troubles, advice, friendship, music, food, help, transportation, tools, and making the saga less traumatic than it might have been.

Just a quick note to those from the Decadent Thing to you all know that I made it safely back to Cedar Rapids last night.

    With apologies to Cat Stevens
Morning has broken, no-one can fix it.
Night time has fallen, cracking the dawn.
You are so clumsy! Watch where you're going!
This is just why we can't have nice things!

The stars have faded, sunset is dimming.
You can't tell me you didn't use bleach.
Wait 'til your father learns of this mischief .
Use your allowance to buy a new day.

Now, with that out of the way, perhaps I can get this thing out of my head. If anyone wants to improve it, go ahead.
